31st August 2007 – Day 3 on the Great Ocean Road

Very windy… gusts in excess of 120 km/h (70 mph)…

Today we drove up the Ocean Road from Port Fairy to Melbourne. It was incredibly windy…

On the drive we passed one of the key attractions of the area – the Twelve Apostles. (This is actually a bit of a ‘con’ as wind and the tide as considerably reduced their numbers.)

As this was the middle of the Australian winter the roads were quiet, and the car parks empty. However, in the middle of summer, I bet the complete reverse is true!

One thing that did amuse me was this curious sign at one of the carparks…

I asked about the sign as I could see why some one would bring a dog on a day out… but a cat? Well, it turns out that there is a ‘grey arm’ of pensioners in Australia that when they retire sell their houses, buy a camper van and go traveling, complete with their cats and dogs….

Apparently this used to be connected to the land and you could walk out to it – and then one day the main bridge collapsed and people were trapped on the now island!

After the amazing cliffs of the The Apostles area of the Great Ocean Road it flattens out and runs along the coast on to Melbourne.

And finally, in to Melbourne….
