30th August 2007 – Day 2 heading for Great Ocean Road, reaching Port Fairy

Strange breakfast… we had been provided with a tray of cereal, bread (for making toast), and cups etc. (plus fruit juice in the ‘fridge) the night before.

Room was very comfortable and warm. During the night the wind got up and was a howling gale in the morning.

Quick look around Robe. Not a lot there. A few shops (art galleries and coffee shops). Found an interesting little local museum with a very good display of old (and not so old) photos of Robe. One thing I found surprising was that a German mine was found off the coast of Robe in the Second World War. A local fisherman spotted it, circled it a few time in his boat to try and work out what it was and then headed back to the village to report it to the local police constable! Another fisherman ‘lassoed’ it (rather him than me!!), and dragged it ashore where it was disposed of by a Navy bomb-disposal unit.

Drive from Robe to Port Fairy? Boring… very flat, lot of farm land. Again, the GPS unit did not have a lot to report… ‘drive 100+ km and then go straight on’!

At Port Fairy we stayed in a small hotel and took some time to explore the area. One place of interest was a small nature reserve near the town that had some stunning sea views, wildlife, and a great light house.
