29th August 2007 – Day 1 heading for Great Ocean Road, reaching Robe

Driving from Adelaide to Melboune along the Great Ocean Road (well, actually only day three is the Great Ocean Road). Left Adelaide around 1430, having picked the car up at Hertz, and arrived in Robe (in the dark) at 1830.

Drive down to Robe was amazing. You leave Adelaide and then 100+ km later turn right… for the next 194 km, go straight on, until you reach Kingston, where you go straight on….! I have never seen a route that was so long with so few ‘turns’ or ‘junctions’.

The countryside was surprisingly lush and green. Lots of trees. One area that surprised me consisted of what looked like ‘salt flats/marshes’ but was clearly too far from the sea and appeared to be on the higher ground. The landscape consisted of a series of shallow lakes (some dried out, some with a small amount of water), and small tufts of grass like plants.

Robe is a small village on the coast and booked in to the Caledonian Inn.

The Caledonian is a small ‘pub’ with a good menu and a number of rooms and cottages for rent, and backs right on to the beach.
